2012 Meeting Schedule

The 2012 meeting schedule has been set. Meetings are held on the 2nd Thursday of the month, every other month beginning in March. The first meeting will be on March 8 at the Union Bank Hospitality Room in Japan Center in San Francisco.

The schedule for tanseki (stone collecting trips) will be set at the March meeting.

The Annual exhibit will be the August 4 & 5, 2012.

30th Anniversary SF Suiseki Kai Exhibit

The San Francisco Suiseki Kai 30th annual exhibit will be held this year on August 6-7. We hope to be able to show again some of the best prize-winning suiseki from the preceding 30 years.

Location: Union Bank Hospitality Room, Japan Center, 1675 Post Street, San Francisco 94115.

Times: Saturday & Sunday August 6 & 7, 10 am – 4 pm both days.

2010 – The Suiseki Year in Pictures

The new year is well underway, and we are busy planning our suiseki activities for 2011. Abundant rains here in Northern California this winter point to a fine collecting season this year.

Meanwhile, as we are wait for the water levels to go down, we can enjoy our memories of a busy 2010.

In August we held our 29th Annual Exhibit at Japan Center. Mr. Hiroshi Suzuki exhibited several of his finest stones from his 30 year career as a suiseki artist and collector. One of the stones he exhibited was the beautiful ume pattern stone pictured above.

The club went on group tanseki trips to the Eel River (in May), the Little Truckee (August), Klamath River (September) and, Black Butte Lake (October). And at the end of October we (along with friends from the California Suiseki Society) hosted a guided tanseki to the Eel River for attendees of the Golden State Bonsai Federation convention.

Suiseki Kai Annual Exhibit

The San Francisco Suiseki Kai 29th annual exhibit will be held this year on August 7-8. Club members have had good collecting trips in the past two years, and we hope to have a good show.

2010 Officers and Schedule

Our General meeting was held in December this year (due to room scheduling requirements), and new officers were chosen. The 2010 officers are: Chairman – Mr. Ben Nanjo, President – Ms. Janet Roth, Vice-President – Mr. William (Brent) Meran, Secretary – Mr. Dorwin Hilsenbeck, Treasurer – Ms. Hsu Chen, Tanseki Chairman – Mr. Mas Nakajima, Exhibit Chairman – Mr. John Nishizawa, Membership Chairman – Mr. Mike Iwasaki

The 2010 Schedule has now been posted. As in past years we have planned two club stone-collecting (tanseki) trips this year. A trip to the Klamath area may also be organized in the fall. Please note that, because of room availability, the March meeting will be held on the 1st Thursday of the month (March 4) rather than the usual 2nd Thursday.

28th Annual Exhibit – 2009

The 28th annual exhibit of San Francisco Suiseki Kai was held on August 1-2, 2009. The show included 48 stones, including a small collection of biseki (beautiful stones).

Biseki are stones that do not meet the aesthetic criteria for suiseki, but are appreciated for their beautiful colors or interesting features. This year’s biseki included chrysanthemum stones from Japan, a small fish from Niagara Falls, and a hut stone that had belonged to the owner’s father.

Annual Exhibit Date set for 2009

Times: Saturday August 1, 10 am – 5 pm;

Sunday August 2, 11 am – 4 pm.

2009 Schedule Posted

The 2009 Schedule has now been posted. Two tanseki trips have been tentatively scheduled as well as the annual daiza-making workshop. Note that the dates for the annual exhibit have not yet been decided. (The show is normally held on the first weekend of August. However this may be changed so as to coincide with the Japan Center Fall Festival.)

27th Annual Exhibit – 2008

The members of San Francisco Suiseki Kai held their 27th annual exhibit on August 2 – 3, 2008. The show included 37 suiseki, almost all of which were collected in Northern California. Each member voted for his or her favorite stones. The three suiseki that received the most votes were awarded plaques, with ribbons given to the next five.

We would like to thank everyone who attended our show, and hope to see you again next year.

San Francisco Suiseki Kai will hold its 27th annual exhibit this year on Saturday and Sunday, August 2-3, 2008. The exhibit will be in the Union Bank Hospitality Room in the Japan Center of San Francisco. Hours are 10 am – 5 pm Saturday and 10 am – 4 pm on Sunday.
